If you don’t wish to install this update then be on the look out for update KB971033 (aka WAT) when your Windows pc does a windows update, then all you have to do is right click and select ignore update.

From Ewandoo:

Fortunately Microsoft has made it easy for the people who don’t want this update to uninstall it. If you haven’t downloaded and installed this update then you can disable it using the following method:

Block Windows 7 Activation Update KB971033
1-Go to Start Menu and write Windows Update in the Start Menu Search
2-Select Windows Update to go to Windows Update program
3-Select Optional Updates
4-Search for the update labeled “Update for Windows 7 (KB971033)”
5-Right click it and select Hide Update

If you have already installed this update. Don’t worry! Let me tell you how to uninstall this update the safer way.
1-Go to Control Panel –> Programs –> View installed Updates
2-Search for “Update for Windows 7 (KB971033)”
3-Right click it and select Uninstall.
4-This will uninstall this activation update and you’ll be able to use your Windows 7 without any overloads from Microsoft

Here’s what Microsoft had to say:

In the coming days, we’ll be deploying a new update for Windows Activation Technologies, the set of built-in activation and validation components built into Windows 7. Called Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, this update will detect more than 70 known and potentially dangerous activation exploits. Activation exploits are sometimes called “hacks”, and attempt to bypass or compromise Windows’ activation technologies. This new update is further evidence of Microsoft’s commitment to keeping customers and partners secure. The update will determine whether Windows 7 installed on a PC is genuine and will better protect customers’ PCs by making sure that the integrity of key licensing components remains intact.

So, what are the risks of activation exploits?Searching for, downloading, or installing activation exploits or counterfeit software on the Internet is risky, because sites that advertise these pirated products often contain malware, viruses, and Trojans, which are found bundled with or directly built into the activation exploit or counterfeit software. A study by research firm IDC, The Risks of Obtaining and Using Pirated Software, shows that one in four Web sites offering counterfeit software attempted to install unwanted or malicious code upon downloading. And this rate is rising. Media Surveillance, an anti-piracy solutions company based in Germany, recently downloaded more than five hundred pirated copies of Windows 7 (and Windows activation exploits) and found that 32% contained malicious code. These are very disturbing figures – especially when considering that resellers may be using these downloads to claim that the PCs they sell include genuine Windows. Buyers of new PCs should always check for the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) to verify that the PC they are purchasing contains only genuine Windows. A quick visit to our How to Tell website tells buyers what a genuine COA should look like.

The Update is designed to run on all editions of Windows 7, although we will distribute first to the Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. It will be available online at www.microsoft.com/genuine beginning February 16 and on the Microsoft Download Center beginning February 17. Later this month, the update will also be offered through Windows Update as an ‘Important’ update.

Although the Update will not be directly offered through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), which is used by enterprise customers to manage the distribution of software updates in their IT environment, a WSUS administrator can import this update into WSUS through the Microsoft Update catalog. I’d like to stress that the Update is voluntary, which means that you can choose not to install it when you see it appear on Windows Update. I also want to stress that installing this update will not jeopardize your privacy; although the update contacts Microsoft’s servers to check for new threats as I outline below, the information we receive from PCs during these checks does not include any personally identifiable information or any other information that Microsoft can use to identify or contact you. This update follows the same stringent and secure set of privacy principles and policies as other downloads. The update can also be uninstalled at any time.

How does it work? Once installed, the Update protects customers by identifying known activation exploits that may affect their PC experience. If any activation exploits are found, Windows will alert the customer and offer options for resolving the issue – in many cases, with just a few clicks. Machines running genuine Windows 7 software with no activation exploits will see nothing – the update runs quietly in the background protecting your system. If Windows 7 is non-genuine, the notifications built into Windows 7 will inform the customer that Windows is not genuine by displaying informational dialog boxes with options for the customer to either get more information, or acquire genuine Windows. The desktop wallpaper will be switched to a plain desktop (all of the customer’s desktop icons, gadgets, or pinned applications stay in place). Periodic reminders and a persistent desktop watermark act as further alerts to the customer.

It is important to know that the customer will see no reduced functionality in their copy of Windows – a customer’s applications work as expected, and access to personal information is unchanged. The Update will run periodic validations (initially every 90 days). During validation, Windows will download the latest ‘signatures’ that are used to identify new activation exploits – much like an anti-virus service. When tampering, disabling, or missing licensing files are discovered, the WAT Update runs a check and repair weekly to ensure that the licensing files are properly repaired.

What ive been planning on doing for a long while was to setup a place where people could upload old and new mods, programs, patches, articles on modding, research, pictures etc everything really, all to one place. With the relevant Creator/Author details if the mod wasn’t yours, Release dates, The History, Description, Different versions of the files etc – you know all those kind of things. It would be one big Halo Modding Archive spanning all the titles Halo1, 2 and 3 and all the different platforms.

I have currently host online some files and some big map packs ( http://halo.snaver.net/modding/h1x/mpack.php ) for people to download, I did this ages ago its just a simple html page linking to the files i’ve hosted. But this gives you a very general idea of what it would be like, it would be alot more advanced, dynamic and I hope there would be a lot more files and an active community behind it all.

It wouldn’t be a ‘forum community’ anymore sort of thing ( I personally dont think this is what people want anymore, if people just want to mod or find out/research about modding its hard to do that on a forum – plus its too hard to moderate aswell ) I would allow comments on files/programs/etc to allow for discussion and I would allow user registration so they could upload any random mods they had laying around on their computer, because I bet a lot of people have loads of Halo Modding related stuff on their hard drives – Which they may just get rid off.. Now that halomods.com is gone alot of mods are hard to come by!

I have quickly looked into it, and there could even be put online a complete static archive of the old halomods forum, for historical purposes so people could look back through everything – Maybe with the original theme!

Things would be have to be moderated and approved of course, but with the help of a few people it could become a great collection – a great resource for all the hard work people have put in. I would have to code a completely custom system, from scratch to do all this of course.

I have started to design the back-end and the database structure, but its a massive undertaking that will take a while – there’s no pre-built solution out there. Its going to be PHP/MySQL with the codeigniter php framework which I’m most comfortable with and I think will provide the most expandable solution.

I hope that someone out there, or SourceGuy has all the relevant files from the forum because that would be a great start – I could pull all the relevant details from mod postings into the new system, along with the files and it would save a lot of time of people uploading each entry one-by-one.

If SourceGuy is willing to transfer the domain control over to me that would be great too, then anyone looking for Halo modding related things then they would be able to find them easily.

Anyway this is just my vision, I would love peoples opinions and feedback on this so either send me an email or just add a comment here.

Cheers

P.S

If anyone has contact with SourceGuy please send him a link to this post, or ask him to check his emails I havent heard anything back from him yet regarding this!

I’ll be outlining what went on, who was involved and the outcome.

If you have any questions about what went on, the domain www.ratm.co.uk or just want to contact me you can at ratm@snaver.net.

This was all started by two people – John and Tracy Morter, it all started off with a Facebook Group. I decided to help out by registering the domain. and updating the website daily with new information and how you could help out! Becuase of the huge amount of traffic generated, the Facebook page was unable to cope, and so that was my main motivation for putting the site online, and the fact I thought there should be a place other than Facebook to find out information.

Needless to say the site never went offline, which was down to some clever coding and caching techniques..

Here’s what they had to say after Rage had successfully reached No1.

WOW!!!!

WE DID IT!

We all should be incredibly proud of what we have achieved on this group. We’ve shouted that we’ve had enough of a dull Christmas chart every year and given it a complete shot in the arm for many years to come.

We can also be very proud in our fundraising for SHELTER.
Over £83,000 (at time of writing) and still counting is an amazing feat for just a humble facebook group
The link is here http://www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas and we DON’T want to stop giving…so let’s see how much we can get!

Where do we go from here? Well first of all this group is now as good as a historical document. It’s made money…it’s broken 2 chart sales records…and it’s made HISTORY

Secondly, it’s given many others hope that the singles chart really is for everybody in this country of all ages, shapes, and sizes…and maybe re-ignited many people’s passion for the humble old single as well as THAT excitement again in actually tuning in to the chart countdown on a Sunday.

Lastly…many of you have asked us about next year…what are we going to do? Well for us two the answer is quite simple…we won’t

How can you top this? To put one of your favourite bands, with one of your all-time favourite tracks at the top of the Christmas chart? Well in our opinion you can’t. So officially here, we’ll offer to support others if they fancy a go like we did…but we won’t attempt to top the Christmas chart again. It’s now been done..and bloody well if you ask us…

J & T x

I would think newspappers will be next!

LET’S GET RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE TO THE CHRISTMAS NO.1 SPOT THEN!

Q: So how do we do this then?

Take your pick(s) of the digital providers below. It should take you to the page where you can purchase your copy of KILLING IN THE NAME. in most cases it’s track#2 but check before you click!

Q: Why have you used shortened links?

It gives us a ROUGH idea of how we are doing on sales. I can get a click count this way

Q: But there’s other websites now offering RAGE for Xmas links?

Yes, but these links right here were created by the creators of the whole campaign themselves. They are not ‘affiliate’ links so therefore nobody gets any sort of ‘commision’. You don’t need to go anywhere else.

Q: When do i buy ‘Killing In The Name’?

NOW until Saturday 19th December at 23:59pm

Q: Can I buy loads of downloads?

In a nutshell no. If the Chart company see unusual selling patterns they can ignore the bulk purchases or worse still remove the track completely. As admin I cannot be seen to encourage this

** DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT 10 TIMES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT…IT’LL JUST GET ANNULLED FROM THE CHART **

Now because of my setup from EukHost in the uk I use plesk as my admin system, which obviously has custom rules etc for how php and apache behave together and how they are setup. For some reason the assetlib code could correctly get to the styles I had defined in the assetlib config file – ‘/assets/’, but I had to manually change a line of code in the assetlib library file.

Before:

$mtimes[] = filemtime(dirname(FCPATH).'/'.trim($asset,'/'));

After:

$mtimes[] = filemtime(dirname(FCPATH).'/httpdocs/'.trim($asset,'/'));

For some reason when the function filemtime went to do its thing it would try and run the function of this location ‘/var/www/vhosts/domain.com/assets/styles_1.css’ which is wrong as you can see its missing the ‘httpdocs’ after the domain name. I did change my assetlib config file to ‘/httpdocs/assets/’ but that didn’t work at all, the code seems to me to be wrong. However when i changed the code this fixed that specific problem and i can now use the library as it is intended, however I still can’t manage to get the compression aspect of the library working yet, I havent looked into yet but i’m guessing its just a pathing issue again.

Anyway I hope this can help people that have a similar setup to me, or are having the same issue.

Rough outline of my current setup:

Assetlibpro_v1.0.5

Running centos-5-x86

Running PHP 5

Running Plesk 9.3.0
