I noticed today while viewing my Last.fm profile that they are utilizing some of new CSS3 properties that are starting to make an appearance on the web. They have been very clever and only use these properties aesthetically in their design as to not break the design layout in Internet Explorer (Of which no current support is available for CSS3 in any of Microsoft’s released browsers).

You may be surprised to learn they currently use:

box-shadow

text-shadow

border-radius

border-color

opacity

rgba

You can see the difference this makes between browsers that support CSS3 and those that don’t (Firefox 3.6.3 at the top and IE8 bellow both running on windows)

Last.fm Header Comparison

Last.fm Box Comparison

As you can see the menu items are utilizing the text-shadow property to give them a very slight.. text shadow! And the drop down profile box to the right is using the box-shadow property. The second image shows the border-radius in use to round the corners of the boxes.

Doing it in this way allows for pretty nice degradation between the browsers that support these new properties and those that don’t, and are a nice little perk to those users of the supported browsers.

On the eUKhost blog, they just posted a new article about Virtuozzo Power Panel that comes with most of their VPS servers. The Power Panel is a great piece of kit and I’ve been intending on writing a little blog post for a while about how easy it is to use, not only for the features listed in the eUKhost blog but more aimed towards the ease of installing programs and applications at the operating system level (CentOS in my case).

To access the panel you need your servers ip address and then you can access it via your web browser like so: 90.105.106.42:4643

Under the Packages tab you can see the list of applications that are available to your server, an example of which can be seen bellow.

From this screen you can Install, Update and Remove programs from your server at your discretion. Handy if you need to install, remove or even update programs like Perl, Plesk API common files, awstats, nano text editor etc.

For those not familiar with the command line of UNIX, this is a god send.

Got pretty frustrated with this today, playing around with jQuery’s Validation plugin and had it all setup nicely, then I noticed once everything was validated I couldn’t submit the form.. Odd!

No errors in Firefox/Chrome so switched over to good old Internet Explorer which produced this error message:

Webpage error details

Message: Object doesn’t support this property or method
Line: 33
Char: 4
Code: 0
URI: http://www.example.com/globals/js/main.js

Message: Object doesn’t support this property or method
Line: 33
Char: 4
Code: 0
URI: http://www.example.com/globals/js/main.js

And this line correspondences to the form.submit() in the submitHandler, as seen bellow

submitHandler: function(form) {
$(“div.error”).hide();
form.submit();
},

Interesting.. Now the submit method is indeed supported as stated in the Validation Plugins documentation (which you can see here). So what’s breaking it?

Apparently jQuery does something funky in relation to the markup of your form if the submit button with the form markup is named the same as the method, in this case – ‘<input name=”submit” type=”submit” />’.

So the fix here would be to re-name your forms submit to something else for example – ‘<input name=”submitBtn” type=”submit” />’ should do it.

I’m just starting to get to grips with all this jQuery stuff so if anyone knows why this was happening post in the comments, be good to know for future reference!

It is now a very clean, very usable editor with fine-tuned controls and a better object collision system allowing for more control over objects and the way they interact with each other.

But what people may not know is that the Halo Community itself wanted this, a long time ago and what a group of hackers achieved in 2004 was a map editor for the original Halo (xBox) – all well before Halo 3′s in-game version which shipped September 25th 2007.

The Forge Editor is essentially a map editor for the multiplayer aspect of the game, the editor allows you to Spawn, Move and Delete game-world objects – not the actual terrain however, like some other map editors.

When players first got their hands on this new tool in Halo 3 the community went absolutely crazy, and the sheer amount of different things that the community created took Bungie by surprise, they knew it was going to be a hit, they just didn’t release how big it was going to be and how the community would take it to its limits.

Example Halo 3 Forge Art - Ghostbusters: Who You Gonna Call

But it was easy to see how much the Halo Community at large wanted to mess around with different aspects of the game, you can see this from the hive of activity in the Halo Modding scene.

Perhaps this is where Bungie got the idea from, straight from the Halo Modding Scene – or maybe it was always in the back of their minds that it was something they wanted to do and the technology of the Xbox360 allowed them to do this.

When I initially saw the new Forge I was instantly reminded of a picture I had taken back in 2004 when I doing the exact same thing, before pretty much everyone else – and I want people to know that we had this, and not to forget, which is why I’m writing this post..

I had this error message when trying to log onto Steam today. I left it a couple of hours but it still wouldn’t let me log on.

Cannot Connect to Steam Network – please try again later.

What you may need to do, which worked for me is to delete ‘ClientRegistry.blob’ in Steam’s installation folder (C:\Program Files\Steam) and try to restart steam. If this doesn’t do the trick try deleting ‘AppUpdateStats.blob‘.

I also had to run Steam with administrator privileges initially after this to get it to work, let me know if this works for you too.

Because of the way that ‘open_basedir’ works in restricting everything some things that you access file system wise in code, it will restrict you also in using programs such as ImageMagick , or in applications that may use it such as Coppermine Gallery or Menalto Gallery.

To fix this you need to either turn off openbase_dir or make it so that the PHP running on the target domain can access the directory where ImageMagick resides. First you need to modify your vhost.conf, you can see examples of modifying/changing/reloading this config file here.

php_admin_value open_basedir /var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs:/tmp:/usr/bin/

Above you can see the line of code that needs to be added, the first two options ‘/var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs’ and ‘/tmp’ are the default running settings (restricting things), so when defining the value of the open_basedir you need to re-declare these two. The third path allows our PHP to access that folder when running, and so can now access ImageMagick etc, along with a lot of other things.. Security risk perhaps, but at least it works for now.

I’ll look into a more secure method, please comment if you can suggest/add anything to this topic.
